The rules that actually matter
The link has to come first
Tesla is strict about order of operations: open the referral link, then place the order from it. A referral cannot be attached after the order exists, and Tesla states this three separate times in its own terms. This is the single most common way people lose the benefit.
First qualifying purchase only
Buyer benefits are for your first qualifying Tesla product. If you already own a qualifying Tesla vehicle or a Tesla-installed energy product, a referral link will not add the buyer benefit, though existing owners have their own loyalty benefits in the Tesla app.
New cars only, but inventory counts
Pre-owned vehicles do not qualify. A new inventory car does, so you can grab an existing build and still get the benefit as long as you order it through the referral link.

Depending on the product, Tesla delivers benefits as Tesla Credits in your account rather than a line item at checkout. Credits can pay for Supercharging, Tesla Shop orders, service balances, subscriptions, upgrades, and even a future vehicle, and they expire 12 months after they are granted.
