Tesla referral code not working? Here's the fix
Nearly every "invalid", "expired" or "won't apply" referral problem comes down to one of five causes, and the fix is the same for the first two: open a fresh working referral link before you place the order.
You're typing a code instead of opening a link
Tesla has no referral code box at checkout, so a code typed as text has nowhere to go. The referral attaches through the link itself: open a referral link, then order as normal.
The code or link is old or maxed out
Referral links change and old ones stop working. Each owner can also earn referrer benefits only 10 times per calendar year; once a link hits that limit, Tesla gives buyers who use it no buyer benefit and its referral page says the limit has been reached. Use a fresh link, or this site's backup link.
The order was already placed
Tesla only applies referral links used before the order is placed. If you have already ordered, a referral cannot be added to that order afterwards.
It's a car order
Since late October 2026, Tesla's Refer and Earn page lists solar panels as the only product that earns buyer benefits. A Model 3, Model Y or Cybertruck order through a referral link gets no referral benefit, so there is nothing for the link to apply.
The order isn't eligible
Tesla's qualifying list names solar panels, not Powerwall on its own. Energy products only count when Tesla installs them, and buyer benefits are only for your first qualifying Tesla purchase, so owners of Tesla solar, Solar Roof or Powerwall cannot use a friend's link.

Why does my Tesla referral code say expired or invalid?
Most often the code is simply no longer current, or its owner has used up the 10 referrals Tesla allows per year, in which case Tesla's referral page says the referral limit has been reached. Opening a fresh, working referral link before you order avoids the problem.
Can I apply a referral after placing my Tesla order?
