How we pick and test the gear on ReferCharge

STEP 1

We buy it and fit it ourselves

Every product recommended here was bought with our own money and installed on our own Tesla. Nothing on this site is a spec sheet summary written from the listing photos. If a set fought us during install, shifted once it was in, or turned out flimsier than the description implied, that is something we found out with the product in our hands rather than from a review score.

STEP 2

One pick per category, not a catalog

Tesla accessory listings are an ocean of near-identical products from interchangeable brands. Stocking all of them helps nobody. For each category we settle on a single item to recommend, and a category only appears here once we are confident in the pick. That is why the list is short and stays short.

STEP 3

Fitment before anything else

Tesla changed the floor pan with the 2024 Model 3 refresh, changed the interior again with the newest Model Y, and uses two different center screen sizes across the lineup. A product that fits one generation sits wrong in another. Every fitment-sensitive pick is mapped generation by generation, and the card gives you a button per version so the link lands on the set built for your car.

STEP 4

Verified on the listing, never on a search card

Search result cards routinely show a marketplace price from a different seller, or a size and capacity that is no longer available. Every product and every version button here was opened on its own listing page and checked there. Version links come from the listing's own selector rather than from guesswork, so a button labelled for your model year actually loads that model year.

STEP 5

Rejections are part of the work

Plenty of obvious candidates did not make it. Suspiciously cheap high-capacity flash drives were rejected because drives in that category commonly misreport their true size, so larger Sentry storage points at established portable SSDs instead. One popular drive family was dropped when its listed capacities turned out to be unavailable. A search for Model 3 rim protectors returned hubcap replacements rather than protectors, so we shipped the Model Y card alone rather than link the wrong product.

STEP 6

Nobody pays to be here

No brand paid for placement, sent free product, or had any say in these picks. The links are affiliate links, which means a purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you, but the commission does not decide the ranking. The list is ordered by how likely a new owner is to actually want each item.

STEP 7

Checked again, and dated

Listings change: prices move, sellers disappear, generations get added. Guides carry the date they were last reviewed so you can judge for yourself how current they are. When a pick stops being the right answer it gets replaced, not quietly left up.

Do you actually own the products you recommend?

Yes. Every pick was bought with our own money and fitted to our own Tesla. That is the whole reason the list is short: recommending something means living with it first, which does not scale to a hundred products and is not supposed to.

What about the versions that do not fit your car?

We own one Tesla, so hands-on use covers the version that fits it. For the other generations on a card we are explicit about what we did instead: we mapped the maker's own version list, opened each listing, and confirmed the model years it is cut for. That is fitment verification rather than hands-on use, and we would rather draw that line clearly than imply we have driven every Tesla ever built.

Why is there only one pick per category?

Because a list of eight near-identical floor mat sets is not a recommendation, it is homework handed back to you. Choosing is the useful part. Where a genuine split exists, for example a stick versus a portable SSD for Sentry storage, the card gives you the options rather than pretending one answer fits everyone.

How do you make money?

Two ways, both disclosed. Product links are affiliate links, so a qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Separately, Tesla pays a referral reward when someone orders a car through a referral link, which is what funds the free referral side of this site. Neither changes what anything costs you.

What if a pick is wrong for my car?

Tell us. The contact form goes to a real inbox, and fitment corrections get priority because a wrong fitment note is the most damaging kind of error a site like this can make.
