Why Tesla insurance costs more, and how to pay less
By ReferCharge. Updated 2026-08-05. Tesla Insurance details verified against Tesla's own insurance support pages.
The premium quote is the second sticker shock of buying a Tesla. It is a real pattern, not bad luck: insuring a Tesla genuinely costs carriers more than insuring a comparable gas car, and they price accordingly. The reasons are mechanical, and so is the fix. Here is what drives the number, what Tesla's own insurance actually is, and the one step that reliably brings the cost down.
Why the premiums run high
Repairs cost more than the fender bender suggests
Tesla bodies use aluminum panels and large structural castings. Damage that would be a cheap panel swap on an ordinary car can require replacing a much larger assembly, and insurers price that risk into every policy.
Cameras and sensors need recalibration
A Tesla's driver assistance relies on cameras behind the windshield and in the bumpers and fenders. After even minor damage, those need professional recalibration on top of the body repair, which pushes up the average claim.
Fewer shops, longer repairs
Not every body shop is approved for Tesla structural work. A smaller repair network means longer waits, longer rental car periods on claims, and higher totals, all of which feed back into premiums.
It is a fast, expensive car
Insurers also see the basics: a quick, higher-value vehicle in a price bracket where claims are costly. None of this is unique to Tesla, but it stacks on top of the repair economics above.
Tesla Insurance, honestly
Tesla sells its own insurance, and for many owners it is worth a quote. Its Real-Time Insurance prices your policy on how you actually drive: the vehicle, where you live, how much you drive, your coverage choices, the car's monthly Safety Score and FSD (Supervised) usage. California is the exception, where the product exists but the Safety Score is educational only and does not set your premium.
The catch is availability. As of 2026-08-05, Tesla Insurance operates in 15 states:
If you live in one of them, get Tesla's quote through your Tesla account while preparing for delivery and include it in your comparison. If you do not, or if your Safety Score has bad weeks, a traditional carrier can easily win. Nobody pays us to say either of those things; Tesla has no affiliate program for its insurance.
The one step that reliably works
For the same driver, the same car and the same coverage, quotes differ between carriers by amounts that make the hour of comparison the best paid hour of the purchase. Insurers weigh Tesla repair risk very differently, so the spread on a Tesla tends to be wider than on an ordinary car. Comparing before delivery is not a savings hack, it is just how this market works.
Timing matters more than brand
Coverage has to be active when you pick the car up, and delivery can move earlier with little notice. Run your comparison the week you get a VIN, pick the policy, and set the start date to your delivery day. The before-delivery checklist covers the rest of that week.
Common questions
Is Tesla Insurance always the cheapest option for a Tesla?
No. It is often competitive because it prices on your actual driving via the Safety Score, but often is not always. Treat Tesla's quote as one entry in your comparison, not the automatic answer. You can get it through your Tesla account while preparing for delivery.
Do I need special EV insurance for a Tesla?
No. A Tesla is insured with a standard auto policy. What matters is the same as any car: liability limits that actually protect you, comprehensive and collision if the car's value warrants it, and an insurer whose approved repair network includes Tesla-capable shops in your area.
Why is my Tesla quote so much higher than my old car?
Mostly repair severity. The premium reflects what the insurer expects a claim to cost, and Tesla claims average higher because of parts, castings and sensor recalibration. Moving up in vehicle value and performance bracket adds to it.
Does Autopilot or FSD lower my premium?
Tesla's own Real-Time Insurance factors FSD (Supervised) usage into its pricing. Traditional carriers generally do not give a discount for it today, and their quotes are driven by the usual factors: your record, location, mileage and coverage choices.
When should I sort out insurance for a new Tesla?
Before delivery day, not on it. Coverage needs to be active when you pick the car up, and quotes are identical whether you get them two weeks early or two hours early. The week you get your VIN is the natural time to run the comparison.
