The Lucid Air Supercharger speed cliff

By ReferCharge. Updated 2026-08-18.

The blunt answer is that a roughly 47 kW session is usually your car meeting a 500V cabinet, not a weak adapter. A true V4 cabinet changes the voltage match and can change the result dramatically.

The three hardware combinations

V3

500V cabinet

  • Lucid states that Air boost charging is limited to 50 kW on 500V equipment.
  • Owner reports commonly land near 42 to 47 kW.

V3.5

V4 post, V3 cabinet

  • The longer cable helps reach the Air's front port.
  • The 500V cabinet still leaves the Air using its 50 kW boost path.

TRUE V4

V4 post, V4 cabinet

  • A true V4 cabinet supplies high enough voltage for the Air to charge directly, without the boost path.
  • Owners have reported roughly 180 kW when the Air can charge at high voltage.

Why the Wunderbox is the limit

Lucid describes the Air pack as a 924V architecture. On lower-voltage DC equipment, the Wunderbox boosts station voltage to the pack, and Lucid documents that boost path at 50 kW. On high-voltage equipment, DC can pass through without that conversion bottleneck. Lucid presents those figures in its technology presentation.

  • The NACS-to-CCS1 adapter changes the connector, not the cabinet voltage.
  • A different adapter cannot raise the Wunderbox boost ceiling.
  • Battery temperature and state of charge can still lower a session below the hardware ceiling.

Can you identify true V4 from the stall?

Not reliably. Tesla's own data sheet allows a V4 post to be fed by either a V3 cabinet or a V4 cabinet. The cabinets may also sit away from the stalls. A tall post and long cable identify the post, not the voltage source behind it. The practical confirmation is the site hardware record or the charging result.

  1. 1Use the Lucid app or in-car navigation to confirm the site is compatible with the Air.
  2. 2Treat a short-cable V3 post as a 500V site and plan around Lucid's stated 50 kW ceiling.
  3. 3Do not assume a long-cable V4-looking post has a V4 cabinet behind it.
  4. 4If charging begins near 42 to 47 kW at low state of charge, changing adapters will not remove the car's 50 kW boost limit.

Why there are no products on this page

Buying another adapter is not a fix for a 500V cabinet. The useful choice is route planning: use the Supercharger as a broad-coverage backup, or choose a high-voltage CCS site when charging time matters.
