How to set up Tesla home charging before the car arrives

Plan charging before delivery: Level 1 can cover low mileage, while Level 2 adds more energy in the same time. The deciding fit is your panel, parking layout and cable reach.

Before anything else
- Have a licensed electrician assess the panel, equipment, vehicle, continuous-load rules, permits and local code.
- Plan cable routing, parking constraints, inspection needs and whether an outlet is too far away or unsuitable.
- Do not use this guide for amperage, breaker, conductor or wiring instructions.
Choose Level 1 or Level 2
LEVEL 1
Standard 120 volt power
- Slow replenishment for low mileage with long overnight parking.
LEVEL 2
240 volt power
- Adds more energy in the same time. Speed varies with the car, charger, approved circuit and temperature.
Most EV drivers charge overnight while the car is parked. Public charging stays available either way.
Choose an outlet or hardwiring
OUTLET
NEMA 14-50 portable unit
- A standardized 240 volt plug and receptacle format, not a universal wiring plan.
- Travels and can be swapped easily, but adds a plug connection and needs somewhere to live.
- A loose, damaged, discolored or unusually warm connection needs attention immediately.
HARDWIRED
Handle at the parking space
- Removes the large plug and receptacle connection.
- Networking, scheduling, load management and outdoor suitability depend on the product's specifications.
An electrician must assess every outlet, box, circuit and panel. The car, charger and approved home capacity all cap the rate.
Match adapters and cable reach
- J1772 to NACS is for public AC Level 2 stations, not a home charger with a NACS handle. Tesla says one comes with every vehicle, so check your delivery before buying another.
- CCS to NACS is for some third-party CCS1 DC fast chargers, not home Level 2 equipment. Confirm hardware and model-year support.
- Plan parking direction and cable reach to the left-rear port without tension, a walkway, closing door or driving over it.
- Do not use an ordinary household extension cord or an input-side extension.
- A vehicle-side extension needs vehicle and charger maker permission, safety certification and electrician confirmation.

Common questions
Do I need Level 2 before delivery?
Not always. Level 1 may cover low daily mileage. Start the electrician review early anyway, in case Level 2 turns out to be necessary.
Is a NEMA 14-50 outlet better than hardwiring?
Neither always wins. Let portability, your panel, the parking layout, local code and the electrician's assessment decide the format.
Which adapter does a Tesla owner need?
J1772 to NACS for public AC Level 2 stations, and CCS to NACS only for compatible CCS1 DC fast charging. Neither is needed for a home charger that already has a NACS handle.
Can I use an extension cord for charging?
Do not use an ordinary household extension cord. Tesla also warns against an input-side extension, and a vehicle-side product needs manufacturer approval, safety certification and electrician confirmation.
