How to choose Tesla trunk and frunk cargo liners

By ReferCharge. Updated 2026-08-17.

Match the liner to your model year and confirm separate coverage for the main trunk floor, sub-trunk well and frunk. A liner makes cleaning easier; it does not seal those spaces.

Check every compartment is covered

  3. 3Sub-trunk well
  • Main trunk floor: confirm the product photos show every piece and whether the lower well still opens without removing the whole mat.
  • Sub-trunk well: many products cover only the upper deck, so confirm a separate lower-well piece.
  • Frunk: needs its own molding because shape, depth, lip, seams, drains, release, light and latch vary by model and year.

Raised edges hold a modest spill, but liquid can escape through a cutout or over an edge. Sharp cargo can puncture a liner, and heavy items still need securing.

Why the frunk needs its own piece

  • Tesla's Model Y manual: some configurations have a waterproof liner and drain plug, others an unsealed frunk that should not hold water-sensitive items. An aftermarket liner changes neither the sealing nor the load rating.
  • Close the hood gently: remove a liner that gets pinched or drifts toward latch or release hardware.
  • Do not get liquid on electronic components or send debris down the drain, and do not hose the frunk out: clean its liner away from the car.

TPE, carpet-backed, and cleaning

TPE

Textured tray with raised edges

  • Does not absorb ordinary water-based spills and lifts out to wipe or rinse.
  • Can slide without underside grip and fit poorly if the molding is inaccurate.

CARPET-BACKED

Closer to the factory cargo area

  • Tends to reduce sliding and rattling, and folds for lower-well access.
  • Exposed carpet dries slowly and holds grit, hair and odors.

For wet or muddy cargo, molded TPE is simpler. For mostly dry luggage and groceries, carpet-backed can feel quieter and grip better. Remove liners, shake or vacuum debris, then wash with mild soap and water if the maker permits.

Common questions

Does a trunk liner protect the sub-trunk?

Not necessarily. Many products cover only the upper deck, so confirm the set includes a separate lower-well piece if you want that compartment protected.

Why does the frunk need its own liner?

Its shape, hardware, access points and drainage all differ from the rear trunk. A frunk piece has to preserve the emergency release, the latch area and any factory drain.

Is TPE better than a carpet-backed liner?

TPE washes easily and does not absorb ordinary liquid spills. Carpet-backed material can feel quieter and grips dry items well, but accurate fit matters more than either material.

How should cargo liners be cleaned?

Remove them, shake or vacuum off debris, then wash with mild soap and water if the maker permits it. Dry both the liner and the surface underneath before refitting.
