Lifting a heavy EV is safety-critical. Use the current vehicle-specific instructions, correctly rated equipment and a flat, firm, high-friction surface. Rivian says passengers should exit, wheel chocks should be placed as directed, Tire Change mode should be enabled and no part of a person should go beneath a jack-supported vehicle. Where Rivian says to lift
For a single-wheel tire change with the supplied tire kit, Rivian directs the jack to the designated point nearest the wheel. For a non-Rivian floor jack, its guide says to remove the relevant underbody panels, keep the jack away from the panels and battery, use a rubber pad and place the jack at the frame-rail lift point. Why jack pucks exist
Aftermarket R1 pucks are shaped to locate in the jack-point opening and give a floor jack or lift pad a defined contact surface. The fitment and materials are maker claims, not Rivian instructions. JackPucks describes its R1T/R1S kit as aluminum with magnetic retention and a rubber contact cap. Maker listing.
A puck does not increase a jack's rating, make an unstable surface safe or replace Rivian's setup steps. Confirm the puck, saddle and jack are mutually compatible before any load is applied.
The equipment numbers that matter
Rivian's October 2025 R1 lifting standard lists a 3-ton minimum floor-jack capacity, 590 mm minimum lift height, a 120–130 mm lift-pad diameter and a rubber pad rather than steel directly against the frame.
