Rivian Gear Guard USB drive requirements and picks

Rivian's Drive Cam needs external storage for saved clips and continuous road recording. The owner guide calls for 128 GB to 2 TB, at least 20 MB/s random write speed, USB compatibility and FAT32 or MS-DOS (FAT) formatting, and it recommends an SSD. Rivian owner-guide source.

All six rows come from the Drive Cam setup section of the R1T owner guide. That guide is dated 18 July 2023, so it documents the R1T and R1S of that period. We have not found a newer published table, and Rivian can change these requirements in a software update, so check the Drive Cam section of the owner guide for your own vehicle in the Rivian app before buying a drive.
Gear Guard is not one storage bucket
Rivian's feature table separates Drive Cam from parked Motion Cam and detected incidents. Drive Cam clips and continuous recordings use the connected external device; Motion Cam and incident videos are listed on the onboard drive. Rivian feature table. A missing external drive therefore does not mean every camera feature stops storing events.
Why a cheap thumb drive can fail
The meaningful number is sustained random-write behavior, not only the large sequential read number printed on a package. Owners report flash drives failing the in-vehicle speed test and previously functioning devices later disconnecting or becoming unreadable. Speed-test discussion · 2026 failure reports. Those are owner reports, not a prediction that every inexpensive drive will fail.
An SSD can also fail, so check the crossed-out camera icon, review recordings periodically and keep the purchase record for the drive's warranty. The forum reports above include SSD failures as well as thumb-drive problems.
Portable SSD options
One drive owners report failing: a rivianforums thread reports a 1TB SanDisk USB-C drive not being recognised by Gear Guard while a Samsung T7 1TB did. Meeting the speed and interface spec on paper is not the same as being recognised by the vehicle, so we are not recommending the SanDisk here.
Samsung lists the T7 Shield's USB and write-speed specifications on its product page; SanDisk's Amazon listing states the corresponding USB-C and write-speed details for the Extreme.

Set it up in the vehicle
- 1. Put the vehicle in Park and open Gear Guard on the center display.
- 2. Choose the setup flow, then connect the drive directly to a center-console USB-C port.
- 3. Follow the on-screen steps. If prompted to format, remember that formatting erases the device.
- 4. Use the Gear Guard eject control before removing a configured drive.

Does every Gear Guard feature write to the USB drive?
