Rivian home charger guide: J1772 or NACS?

By ReferCharge. Updated 2026-08-13.

Match the wall connector to the charge port: use J1772 for a 2022–2025 R1T or R1S and NACS for a 2026+ vehicle. Rivian identifies those model-year groups on its charging page. An adapter can preserve an existing installation, but a new installation is simplest when the cable matches the vehicle.

Choose by model year

2022–2025

Buy J1772

These CCS1-port vehicles accept the J1772 AC connector directly. Rivian J1772 wall-charger listing.

2026+

Buy NACS

Amperage and breaker size

The charger setting cannot be chosen independently of the circuit. Rivian's installation table pairs 32A charging with a 40A breaker, 40A with 50A, and 48A with 60A. Rivian installation table. Have the electrician set the unit to the circuit and local requirements.

Hardwired or NEMA 14-50?

Hardwired

Choose hardwired when the electrician is installing a dedicated wall unit and the desired output or site plan calls for it. The Lectron NEXUS listing below is a hardwired product; its maker page states that installation type.

NEMA 14-50 plug-in

Choose plug-in when a correctly installed NEMA 14-50 receptacle is part of the plan and the charger's configured current matches that circuit. We do not currently list a plug-in unit we have been able to source a clear installation manual for, so the only charger below is the hardwired option. Maker source.
